The Stories You'll Discover Inside:

Plus: Colonial era details, Civil War connections, mill village life, and how this property connects to more American historical events than perhaps any other privately-owned home in the nation.

The Revolutionary War Event That Changed World History

In September 1777, General Weedon's Foray at Spring Grove became "the most impactful event that occurred in Delaware during the American Revolutionary War" because it changed how the rest of the war unfolded. This combat operation prevented the British from seizing Philadelphia without resistance from General Washington at the Battle of Brandywine. The evidence is laid out in detail across 60+ pages of primary source documents.

The Marine Who Tried to Kill Lee Harvey Oswald

Joe Clancy lived at Spring Grove. He also served in the Marines with Lee Harvey Oswald in Japan in 1958. When President Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963, Joe and his friend Freddie drove toward Dallas with a plan to kill Oswald themselves. They were arrested in Tennessee before they could reach Dallas. The next day, Jack Ruby beat them to it. The Wilmington Morning News interviewed Joe with men in black suits, likely government agents, giving witness. Joe gave a false first name to protect himself. Decades later, I uncovered the full, verified story of what really happened.

From the Moon to Your Backyard

In 1977, the Blount family from Alabama purchased Spring Grove. What's the connection? Blount International—the family construction company—built Launchpad 39A, the very platform that launched Apollo 11 to the moon. Neil Armstrong's historic first steps in 1969 had a direct connection to this Delaware property.

The Underground Railroad's Hidden Path

Spring Grove sat along a documented route of the Underground Railroad in Delaware. Mill Creek Road, which passes directly in front of the property, was part of the dangerous path from Milltown to the Delaware-Pennsylvania border. The book reveals how this close-knit mill community would have provided shelter and support during one of America's most perilous periods.

The Fires That Almost Destroyed Everything

In 1891, a suspicious fire ended the milling operation at Spring Grove. The owner died a few years later falling from a wagon. Then in 1965, a tenant was burning leaves when wind carried embers onto the cedar shake roof. By pure luck, the Mill Creek Fire Company was nearby on a training exercise with trucks fully loaded with water. In an era before fire hydrants, this coincidence saved the 200-year-old mansion from destruction.

Delaware Park, The Du Pont Dynasty & Racing Glory

The Spring Grove owner, Donald P. Ross Sr., co-founded Delaware Park Racetrack with William du Pont during the depths of the Great Depression. Ross even ran for State Senate specifically to cast the deciding vote to change the Delaware constitution to allow gambling. The Ross family went on to win the prestigious Preakness Stakes in 1962. The book also uncovers how the Ross family fell victim to the first kidnapping for ransom in the United States in 1874.
